WORLD WILDLIFE DAY 2025: INVESTING IN PEOPLE & PLANET

ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION

In celebration of World Wildlife Day 2025 with the theme "Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet", we are invited to reflect on the importance of biodiversity conservation for a sustainable future. Biodiversity is not only about preserving flora and fauna but also about maintaining the ecosystem balance that supports human life. In this context, PT. Restorasi Habitat Orangutan Indonesia (PT. RHOI) and the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation continues its efforts in orangutan and habitat conservation in Indonesia.

Orangutan Conservation: Protecting Wildlife

Orangutans are intelligent primates found only on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. However, deforestation, illegal hunting, and human-wildlife conflicts continue to threaten their existence. To address this, PT. RHOI, together with the government and supported by several private sectors, has implemented various strategic measures to protect this species. These efforts range from rehabilitating rescued orangutans to releasing them back into their natural forest habitat.

Moreover, PT. RHOI actively safeguards the tropical forest ecosystems that serve as orangutan habitats. Conservation areas such as the Bukit Batikap Protected Forest and Kehje Sewen Forest stand as concrete proof that habitat protection is a crucial element in wildlife conservation. These efforts not only benefit orangutans but also support other species coexisting within the same ecosystem.

The Role of Local Communities in Conservation

One of the key factors in the success of conservation programs is the involvement of local communities as the frontline defenders of nature. PT. RHOI recognizes that engaging local communities is an invaluable long-term investment. Through community empowerment programs, we help expand economic opportunities and improve local livelihoods in a sustainable manner.

This approach not only enhances community welfare but also fosters a sense of ownership over the forests and biodiversity within them. Consequently, local communities become primary partners in preserving wildlife and their habitats.

Together for a Sustainable Future

This year's World Wildlife Day theme highlights the importance of funding in ensuring the sustainability of conservation efforts. Conservation is not a short-term endeavor but a long-term investment requiring continuous support. Funds allocated for conservation efforts are used for various needs, including research, wildlife rehabilitation, habitat restoration, environmental education, and local community empowerment.

Investing in conservation means investing in the future. By integrating people and the planet into a harmonious unity, we can ensure that wildlife continues to thrive, allowing future generations to witness the same natural wonders we cherish today.

We can all start with small steps—raising awareness, supporting conservation campaigns, donating, or actively participating in conservation programs. Together, let’s create a greener and more sustainable world!
